I overheard a conversation yesterday, that sparked my interest and made me feel uneasy at the same time. I stopped to buy fuel on the way home from work and noticed the cashier was frantically tying to clock out and end her shift, but then came right back to the register and totalled up several more purchases. Her co-worker was laughing and said to her in a joking manner That was close, being the nosey person I can be I asked her what her coworker meant by that. Heres where I got blown away. The nice young lady with a smile said We just got our hours cut from 40 per week to 30, and they have made it very clear not to go one minute over 30 hrs per week. I said wow thats horrible, thats 25% of your check per week gone, that you were used to bringing in to pay bills, thats gotta hurt. She said yeah but I can see where they are coming from. With insurance being so high and all that. According to the fair labor standards act every employer has the right to determine if their employee is full-time or part-time. Then I quickly learned that if an employee isnt considered full time, the employer doesnt have to offer any benefits.. In fact I found this on the healthcare.gov website: Employers aren’t required to provide health insurance for part-time employees, even if they provide coverage for full-time employees. So in an effort to get around all of the new insurance requirements and regulations employers are simply cutting back the hours of thier workers and dodging the burden of the insurance crisis. I asked around and found out this is becoming a growing common practice, making the employee have to search for health insurance outside of their employment. If you have ever searched for individual health insurance you understand how pricy it can be, now imagine paying for that after a quarter of your check has been sliced away. However, The affordable health care act will let you purchase insurance at a somewhat decent price though so that you will at least have some coverage and the government swoops in to save the day once again. Im not the most intelligent man by any stretch, but I cant be the only person seeing this make one big ole loop tying it all together. Lord help us where we are headed as a nation, if we dont get some things under control.
