I participate in a mean, steal each others ornament exchange at a Christmas meeting each year for all of the peer counselors for the state of Kentucky. I brought some rustic, country-style raffia and baling twine ornaments in a gift bag with cows on it... because milk jokes are always funny with this crowd. I would never steal someones ornament and I just dont really think it is much fun but other people get really aggressive and mean. Many of the ornaments feature cardinals (for U of L) or wildcats (for UK) or light up or make music or are covered in and shedding glitter liberally. When my turn came (number 6) I chose a tiny gift bag, and I was pleased to see that it held an unassuming star-shaped ornament made of terra cotta and painted like a Mexican tile. No one oohed and ahhhed at it, and I was GLAD because if there is oohing and ahhing, your ornament will most likely be stolen by a co-worker, possibly more than once. I tucked the little ornament back in the bag and returned to my seat. There was a small note inside explaining that the gifter had traveled to Mexico and purchased the ornament in a small shop there last summer. I was so excited because one of my favorite Christmas books is about a little girl in Mexico who chooses a star shaped pinata for her first Christmas posada (a family party, featuring a ritual re-enactment of Mary and Josephs search for a lodging in Bethlehem). I hardly ever get excited about stuff. Things are not usually something that I covet. I was so hoping that no one would steal my ornament. I made it through 79 turns and the ornament is now hanging on my tree. It makes my heart shine like a little girl when I look at it. Tis the season to let the little things shine.
