I personally love the Melbourne Cup and like every other person in our great industry aspire to possibly one day win it! To have a runner in it is an experience like no other and a complete privilege. Our whole industry though is targeted towards 2yo racing and also out absolute world class sprinters. It doesnt matter why and I could sit here and rattle all sorts of ways to try to change this so that we breed more stayers. That is never going to happen though and out breeding industry is not about to do a complete 360 turn. So instead of trying to change the breeding industry, why dont we embrace our speed and 2yo tenacity. Lets increase our prize money for our sprinting races. I dont think our 2yo prize money or program needs change but lets make the Newmarket worth $3m lets make the Sprint in final day the same. Cut back some of our staying race money and spread it to our sprint races ! This Spring has highlighted the fact that our staying races in the Spring dont help our locals anyway. The Moonee Valley Cup, The Geelong Cup etc could be automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup. This would then ensure that they are high quality races and would not matter about prize money. Win win.
