Kevin Vickers, Canadas sergeant at arms since 2006, is being heralded worldwide as a national hero after he reportedly shot and killed a terrorist in the nations Parliament building Wednesday morning. I Witnesses are convinced that Vickers, 58, prevented a large-scale massacre in Ottawa. And though he has not yet spoken publicly about his actions (hes notoriously modest), his record of public service is proof enough of his exceptional character. U.S. defense arrangements with Canada are more extensive than with any other country. The Permanent Joint Board on Defense provides policy-level consultation on bilateral defense matters and the United States and Canada share North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) mutual security commitments. U.S. and Canadian military forces cooperate on continental defense within the framework of the bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). The United States and Canada share two borders and their bilateral relationship is among the closest and most extensive in the world. It is reflected in the high volume of bilateral trade -- the equivalent of $1.6 billion a day in goods -- as well as in people-to-people contact. About 300,000 people cross between the countries every day by all modes of transport.
