I post this every year since 9/11 This was written to me from a friend who worked at ABC studios in NYC September 12, 2001 Hi: Im at work ... very freaky day here. Things are going to be hectic the next few hours. Ive got 2 weeks of commercials to produce and now we need to review them all to see if there are any references to anything that occurred yesterday. Will have to pull all questionable copy and start from scratch. So heres my take on the morning after .... Walking to the train in Brooklyn a guy on a bike yelled out morning baby ... ordinarily Id mutter something unmentionable but today it seemed so inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Crossing in the middle the street against the light by the train in Brooklyn a car stopped to let me continue. So while theyve managed to devastate human lives theyve not destroyed our humanity. Waiting for the train in Brooklyn (an outside elevated line) all was quiet and still except for the sound of military aircraft overhead and the sight of brown smoke still billowing from the WTC. Over the bridge ... sadness at seeing smoke where these impressive towers once stood. People stood looking out the windows and I heard some prayers. (Last night a coworker bought a postcard of the Twin Towers just to remember them.) Walking up E. 49th Street this morning the jets were flying lower and louder. People stood on the corner of 49th and Fifth Avenue looking towards where we saw the burning towers yesterday. Today ... nothing but smoke. Last evening papers and debris billowed out of the sky .. paperwork from the towers ... grand jury stuff, etc. I picked them up and brought them in the house. This morning I looked at those papers and thought of all those people. Gone. Inez has 2 neighbors who were among the first firefighters into the WTC. Gone. Im reading Willa Cathers Death Comes For the Archbishop. Didnt take the book with me today. Somehow after hearing about the FDNY chaplain who perished ... it didnt seem right to read a book with that title today. Tears are coming to my eyes as I write this and my hands are shaking. Cant hold the coffee cup. Gotta go get some work done. Hope youre well and safe. Talk later.
