I posted a still from this movie yesterday on my timeline, but here is a trailer for Michael Dinners 1985 gem Heaven Help Us. Its one of those movies that is easy to forget just how charming and poignant it is, and as I mentioned in my comments, given to some fine casting and character performances in terms of young and veteran actors. Andrew McCarthy is great here as the male lead, and Malcolm Danare is perhaps best known amongst cult horror aficionados (Christine, The Curse, Popcorn), but has a plum role as Caesar which is humanized surprisingly well given the stereotype of the obese third wheel common among youth-oriented comedies. It was also responsible for giving us the first memorable appearances of both Kevin Dillon and Mary Stuart Masterson, featured Patrick Dempsey in a minor role and I would definitely give applause to Stephen Dont Call Me Evil Geoffreys as the most hormone-damaged of the Catholic boys. Theres also John Heard, Donald Sutherland, Wallace Shawn, and the icy Jay Patterson as various elders. The movie has a lot of refreshing, believable character dynamics and the all-important sense of chemistry which makes the best coming-of-age movies stand out from the crass chaff. It would be easy to fault this film for adhering to cliches at times, but those moments are handled deftly and the result is a movie I can definitely see myself wanting to come out on special edition DVD as much as other MIA faves as Summer Girl and Jacks Back. Simply splendid.
