I posted once before, but after reading all of these amazing posts, I feel compelled to say more. Im not only a Regina alum (2000), Im a lesbian. Reading post after post from LGBTQ allies that also identify as Christians has been overwhelming. But in a very positive way. I just wanted to tell all of you that the LGBTQ community rarely (if ever) sees this outpouring of POSITIVE support from the Catholic and greater Christian community. Normally, when we hear of Christians attitudes towards gay people, we are hearing of discrimination, someone getting fired for being gay, someone being shunned because they came out, etc. etc. It is never these positive and supportive voices that are heard. You are drowned out by the voices of hate, intolerance, and bigotry. If I meet someone and they tell me they are a Christian, I am quick to assume they will hate me or cast me out. Reading these posts has opened my eyes to the fact that there are Christians out there who truly embody the teachings of Christ. Love, acceptance, justice, and standing up for those in need. Thats the Jesus I learned about during my 12 years of Catholic education. Those are the ideals I strive to embody in my work as a lawyer, as well as in my personal life. Unfortunately, that hasnt been the Jesus that has been put forth by Christians in regards to gay people. My point in saying all of this: to let the Christian allies of the LGBTQ community know that your voice is important in this struggle. We need more of you to drown out the widespread messages of hate and intolerance that seem to dominate the conversation about gay rights. I keep reading the phrase Be the Change. I couldnt agree more. This situation is an opportunity to show the world what love and acceptance looks like. And that the LGBTQ community deserves to be treated with love and respect, not discrimination and intolerance #bethechange #istandwithbarbwebb #RHS2000
