I posted this on my personal FB wall yesterday and thought several of you who might not see those posts would enjoy reading this as well. My sons thoughts on humility - this is part of what he shared in his black belt interview two weeks ago (he is 17 years old): Humility is the ability to know you are no better than anyone else. To recognize strength in other people, to understand there will always be someone better than you, and to draw strength from it. Not taking another person’s superiority as an insult, nor using it as an excuse to cut them down, but to meet someone better than you, and cheer them on without ulterior motives. When I meet a person who is stronger than I am, I cheer them on in awe of their superiority, not wasting time with feelings of bitterness or self-criticism. When I am absolutely destroyed in a sparring match, I say “good job” and mean it. And when I meet someone who is worse than me, I do what I can to bring them up to my level, and hope they go higher. When I spar with someone that stands no chance against me, I show them how to improve, and hope they heed my words of advice. I hold myself in no higher regard than any other man I meet, and I never cut anyone else down.
