I posted this on the official Chevy Volt page, but it will probably get buried so Im pasting it here too... Your fill in the blank post reminded me of my experience. Quick synopsis... May 24th, I have a 2003 Tahoe with 250K miles. Im planning on buying withing a year. Used Mercedes 350 is leading candidate. The Volt is not even on my radar. A friend, Jess Montgomery, brings his over and has me drive it around my block, on battery, and all of a sudden the Volt is on my radar. He takes the time to educate me about the technology and the Volt specifically. May 30, I go to a dealer to test drive one more extensively. Theyre first three questions were an attempt to lead me away from the Volt. They didnt even know if they had Volts. They were in the back of their lot, dirty, and several bird droppings covered the vehicle. I drove off with no charge on the battery. Within 2-3 miles I had serious doubts about buying! The engine/generator noise/vibration wasnt synced to my acceleration and braking. It was confusing and stressful, but I had the car until the next day so I drove on home. I had a chance to charge it that night. The next morning, there was the car I remembered driving!!! I know you know this, but the DEALERS and new BUYERS dont GET THIS POINT! The Volt is a completely different vehicle when its running on the generator versus charged! Coke-A-Cola and Pepsi dont try to sell us a half empty, plastic bottle, sitting on a dirty desk, at room temperature soda! Why are dealers ALLOWED to let potential customer drive Volts that are not fully charged? Seriously, Chevrolet should fine dealers $1,000 for demoing a Volt that isnt charged. I digress... About a week later, I bought my Volt. If it were not for Jesss efforts and my own work to do the research I would have never even looked at the Volt. Why did the dealer get the $$$ for this deal and not Jess? Matter of fact, I now get why Tesla doesnt want to deal with dealerships!
