I posted this to my wall. One can be only so gracious. My opinion on a vote that went wrong for the City of Cleveland: I would like to bestow the Shame on You award to Keep Cleveland Strong, team owners and Clevelands political leaders who supposedly negotiated our leases, one would have thought, to benefit the city. Instead, the taxpayer obligation will be never-ending. Keep Cleveland Strong used fear-mongering tactics by pulling at the heart-strings of the Cleveland fan-base coupled with lies through omission and straight out lies. Our lease allows team owners to request upgrades in order to remain competitive with other stadia. Therefore, we are paying for new scoreboards from the General Fund. What stadium are we in competition with and is there a prize? The first Sin Tax was to have paid for construction and the tax was to expire. NEITHER HAS OCCURRED. When the shelf-life of our stadia has been reached (30 years has been tossed around), we will find ourselves in the position of Pittsburgh - paying for what has been razed and for what has been newly built. When taxing smokers and drinkers (this method of taxation sets a frightening precedent) is no longer a viable business model due to shrinking numbers, what group or groups of people will be singled out to carry the load for all sports enthusiasts? You can bet it wont be the team owners who continue to earn huge profits because we pay them to do so.
