I pray Franklin Public School Districts Special Services - TopicsExpress

I pray Franklin Public School Districts Special Services department will thoughtfully reconsider their disappointing and dangerous stance. Why is there NO suitable compromise offered to this family? Why would any district fight against this? What have you to lose? Austin risks losing his life without Paris! Paris is a medically necessary seizure alert service dog bred and trained specifically for Austin. I mean no offense to any in stating the raw truth: Paris is more qualified, has more seizure alert and response education than any human/s in Austins class. Paris is to Austin a medically necessary assistive device in exactly the same measure a wheelchair or walker is to another student. Would Franklin deny a student their wheelchair in the classroom because it is too large or requires staff to move it?! I certainly hope not but the current position of this district regarding Paris begs the questions be asked: What are the policies re: medically necessary assistive devices in classrooms? Are there any policies at all? Would it be that difficult for an aide to spend a few moments a day to ensure Austins expertly trained service dog is by his side? This is so disappointing and sad. Franklin has an opportunity to step up, top be a leader to other districts AND to help Austin by accommodating Paris in the classroom. Why is Paris different than any other medically necessary equipment? Most importantly, where does Austins safety rank in this districts staunch position? This comment is from a friend who is in the midst of obtaining a Seizure Alert Dog for her daughter. I have asked many of these questions myself - some to his team, some to the director of special education, and some to the superintendent. I am befuddled and I am not given any answers. We dont want to live in worry that a seizure will strike at any time, and Paris can make sure that we dont. Come on Franklin - DO THE RIGHT THING. https://change.org/p/franklin-ma-public-schools-please-allow-austin-s-mom-to-train-his-existing-1-1-aide-on-how-to-handle-his-service-dog
