I probably have already shared this here although I cant find it. I wrote it as a kind of welcome for new members here so chances are there are quite a number who havent seen it. I tried to speak for us all, hope you enjoy, and welcome to those of you who have recently found your way here! From the Jungle to ‘The Nam’ The answers weren’t in a bottle, Lord knows we looked and tried They weren’t on a road full throttle, when death was oft defied We couldn’t spell it out for loved ones, so without blinking we just lied Suffered sleep to sounds of guns, while quietly we cried Mounting costs through tortured years, and still we crouched and hid Tried to drown with a thousand beers, the things we saw and did Found our boxes and crawled inside, pulling closed the lids Sealing in images of those who died, along with those of frightened kids We waited and we wondered if time could really heal We blubbered and we blundered trying to explain just how we feel Tried to say it don’t mean nuthin, what in fact was so damned real Handed pills, told we must take sumthin, or to just shut up and deal Now one by one we’ve come back in, and huddled safe within the wire Tired and worn and ragged thin, to gather round the fire Seems with been there-done that brothers, things don’t seem as dark and dire There’s sandbags, memories, coffee, and others, but this ain’t no funeral pyre Throw a log on before you sit, have some pound cake and warm beer Share a story, grab your mess kit…and welcome home…we’re glad you’re here!
