I promised to share the story of my 109 year old house. Is it haunted? Im not sure. Does it have a history? Most definitely! Did a tragedy occur within its walls? Yes. From research Ive learned that our house was the second house built on our street back when horse and buggy travel was the norm. A family of nine eventually moved into the home sometime in the 1930s and enjoyed sliding down the curved bannister of the front staircase. Their father was the chief of police. The family grew up, the children married and moved and the mother of this large family lived alone in our home. Sometime in the 1980s the house was burglarized and due to injuries sustained during the burglary, the mother died several days later in the hospital. I of course did not know the story before we purchased the home. A neighbor told me the tragic tale of the sweet lady who died who had lived in our home. Of course she told the story in front of my young and impressionable son whose eyes were bugging out in terror. Do you think we have a ghost? Absolutely not! I reassured him, not wanting him to lose a wink of sleep and knowing his overactive imagination. I had noticed since we moved in that there was a certain room in the house that always smelled liked roses whenever I passed thru it. It didnt matter what time of day or what cleaning products I used. I felt comforted by the scent and chalked it up to coincidence. Our hardwood floors constantly creak. You cant live in a house this old without hearing noise. But footsteps upstairs when were outside on the porch? Thats odd! Weve all heard them and sometimes when Im alone in my bedroom I hear footsteps coming up the stairs. When Im brave enough to peek around the doorway, no one is there. Thank goodness because someone was going to get brained with a tea cup! Several years after operating Miss Melanies Tea Room, the children of that sweet lady gathered in the dining room for a family reunion bringing photo albums and stories of growing up in he residence. The room where the rose scent was so strong had been their mothers bedroom. I laughed to myself when I learned that tidbit. We like to think the sweet woman that lived here is a peaceful landlord and has approved of her home being occupied by a family who ran a tea room. When we hear the footsteps, we look at each other and smile knowingly.
