I propose banning headphones in schools. If a kid is going to be listening to anything, it needs to be out loud so that those responsible for them can ensure that they are not ingesting musical poison as a matter of course and can administer antidotes. As a simple standard, if singing the lyrics out loud in front of a teacher would get you suspended, its probably not good to listen to yourself. This applies to grown-ups, too. Poison is poison, even if youre allowed to buy it. If teachers operate in loco parentis, we should do what parents should do, regardless of whether parents actually do what they should do. If I saw one of my children popping random pills, I would want to know that the pills are vitamins or necessary medication and not narcotics or poison. If it isnt healthy for their body, I should put a stop to it. Similarly, what you put in your head via the lyrics to music affects how you perceive yourself and others. If the lyrics didnt matter, then everything could just be instrumental or skat or bebop, right? So if a kid is listening to headphones, it could be to something healthy (vitamins, etc.), benign (placebo), or harmful (narcotics, poison). If it isnt healthy, I should put a stop to it. As an extreme example, lets analyze the lyrics to Billboards current top two rap songs. #1. Big Sean - I Dont F*** With You I dont f*** with you You lil stupid a** b****, I aint f***** with you You lil, you lil dumb a** b****, I aint f***** with you... These hoes chase bread, aw d***, she got a bird brain... Got a blunt in my dental... Ill make a b**** stand outside forever like the Statue of Liberty... #2. Rae Sremmurd - No Type I aint got no type...Bad b****es is the only thing that I like...I got some models that you see up in the movies and they want to make a flick for the camera...Spend it how I like...Sinning every night...I dont check the price (B****) All I do is swipe. billboard/charts/rap-song
