I ran across this scam a few years ago. At the time the charges were even smaller and easily overlooked. Credit card numbers were being generated en masse and charges for less than a dollar were being applied to all the numbers generated. The scam had two levels. If the charges went through unchallenged the crooks made money. If you think thats a lot of trouble for less than a dollar, imagine hundreds of thousands or millions of successful hits and unchallenged charges. It adds up. The second level is based on them knowing that the number they generated is a valid credit card number, giving them the potential for additional or larger charges. I made the credit card company issue me a new number. At the time they failed to understand the scam themselves.
