I ran into a prominent anti apartheid organizer in Toronto today and said hi. They proceeded to look directly at me, and ignore me. It was as if I wasnt even there. They continued to ignore me until they finished what they were doing and left. This is a person I have never had an antagonistic personal interaction with. I honestly was happy to see them and I hope they are doing well. But this alienation which is perpetrated by unaccountable hierarchies between activists, where the power of disconnect is wielded against those who step out of line, is not a good thing. It promotes toxicity, and it is not conducive to promoting liberatory movements.
