I rarely make long posts, but when I do, Its about something I feel extremely strongly for. How do we stop a systematic dumbing down of an entire nation? We provide the young with the media that will intellectualize it. getrealphilippines/blog/2014/08/how-to-stop-philippine-medias-systematic-dumbing-down-of-an-entire-nation/ I agree with his premise but not with his proposed solution, as this is just raises the question, who will bell the cat? But let a thousand flowers bloom. My personal strategy is to share my knowledge of writing and theatre to those who will inherit whatever earth my generation will leave behind. I write. I teach. I teach writing. I mount plays. I believe that many young people spend more time in school than in front of the television, computers, and movie houses. I believe this because a lot of these young people dont have much choice; parents send them there, and going to school is the way to get allowance. But this is not a bad thing. Rather, this is where we prepare them for the battlefield. Hence, I believe that the teachers who can have an obligation to provide their students venues for art, to teach them that their art can be more than just a hobby, a way to reach out. I believe that schools should encourage their students to promote art not just within their schools but the neighborhood around them. Ultimately, I believe that we should empower the youth to tell their stories in their communities, may it be in school, in family reunions, in their neighborhoods. While at it, teach them what is right.
