I rarely post links regarding the publishing industry and dont start conversations about it on FB, however, Im making an exception because this just boggles my mind and Im in an opinionated mood (you know how rare that is ;) ). So, yes, I have heard about authors paying for hundreds of reviews to game the system on Amazon, more reviews = better exposure. Although, one has to have mega bucks to do this. Now, theres seems to be a new way to game the system to get on best seller lists. Pay a company who hires thousands of people to buy the book and then they refund the buyer their money, so the book gets on best seller lists. Now how does that make ANY AUTHOR feel SUCCESSFUL or VALIDATED??? It makes no sense, not to mention, how expensive it is and whats the point? This is not a rhetoric question, I really would love to know what the point is. The writing community for the most part is filled with supportive authors who can relate to all the ups and downs of the writing and publishing process, and are always there to help new writers, established writers and pay it forward any way they can. Ive been fortunate to meet so many wonderful writers who go out of their way to help each other. I believe that the majority of writers do not pay any services to review their books or to win contests or get on lists. However, obviously some do, given that these types of businesses exist. If someone chooses to pay for reviews or get on lists; of course its their prerogative, but it doesnt mean the rest of us dont have an opinion about it, or choose to not support those practices. I wish this industry wasnt heading down the algorithms and numbers and titles mean everything route, but, I can only control what I do and how I handle my writing journey. And for me, all that is not important. Writing the best book I can write and putting it out there for readers who enjoy my style to get their moneys worth, is what I strive to do. Thats my opinion on all this.
