I read some stuff last week by a theologian named Miroslav Volf. He said something that has been hard to get out of my head. He said, “We (Christians) must empty ourselves to make room for the ‘other’”. What he means by this is that we must empty ourselves of the “religion” that we have built up inside us that keeps us from making room for our enemies, gay people, Republicans, liberals, criminals, conservatives, suburbanites, white people, black people, illegal immigrants…. whatever group that we don’t have room for in our hearts. I also read something by Reinhold Niebuhr about our tendency to turn our ideologies into idols. That also hit me between the eyes. We have turned our “stances” on theological and political issues the altar at which we sacrifice our God. This week, I ask all become more conscious not only of the words of our Lord even more so, the example He left for us to follow.
