I read something on Humans of New York today in which an elderly couple were expressing their happiness for their decision to not have children. They believed this allowed them to travel more, do more films, enjoy their lives, etc. etc. etc. Young girls, listen to me. If you want children, go for it. Children are no hindrance to a successful career, if you ask me. I had four children, and despite the challenges of being a working woman, wife, mother, there are no words to express how joyful and how fulfilled my life has been because I had children. And if you know me, you know that there has been many hindrances, including a civil war, being an ambitious African woman where women arent supposed to even have a voice, etc. But have I lost anything because I had children? No This couple said they produced many films because they had their time, but I have written books and am still writing, and they traveled too, a lot, and I have traveled already enough. I tell you the truth, those of us who decided to have children have had extra writing material because we had children. Imagine- half of my poems would not have been written had I not had children. And here is the biggest benefit, if you ask me: Because I had children, I can always blame my children for everything wrong in my life, my weight, my lost waistline, my aching bones, my impatience, even my lack of organization, hahaha. My children have brought me more joy, and I love them so much, they continue to help me understand how flawed I am, and how much I need God to work on my character. So, if it is your blessing to have children, do not waste any time. Have them. You will survive because many of us women have shown you how. If you have tried, and cannot, it is still okay, dont worry.
