I read somewhere about a new poll that shows that only 37 percent - TopicsExpress

I read somewhere about a new poll that shows that only 37 percent of whites think the Michael Brown shooting and Ferguson protests are race related. Before we get upset, please keep in mind that number is consistent. Only 39 percent of whites voted for Obama in 2012. So this raises two concerns for me: 1) I hope all my white friends and allies fall in that 37 percent bracket (otherwise you cant be my friend) and 2) is that percentage HISTORICALLY consistent? What I mean is: have our white allies always been only in the 30-40 percent range? Throughout history weve always had white allies (abolitionists, civil rights workers, etc.) but their numbers were always small. So among whites who understand and fight racism, have their numbers been consistent across time, or has there been an increase (e.g. 37 percent today vs. 20 percent in the 1960s or 5 percent in the 1850s)? Is progress really occurring? There must be academic studies on this (and if not, this is what white anti racist scholars should be studying).
