I realise I havent updated everyone in a while so this may be a long one! Liz was discharged from hospital on Wednesday on a course of antibiotics that are ongoing until next Saturday. Luckily she can get them at home most days which lessens the trauma for Liz of being stuck in a hospital bed and constantly prodded and poked. She woke up on the morning of her birthday bright and early to balloons, presents and decorations at the end of the bed and was lucky enough to receive plenty of special visitors and even scored some cake! Unfortunately Lizs port is playing silly buggers. For those that arent sure what a port is i will explain a bit. A port is like a little cushion type thing that is surgically placed under the skin. Lines from the port go into the big vessels near the heart. The cushion is accessed (I.e a 1 long or sometimes longer needle is pushed in) and from there her chemo can be given and her blood samples taken. So at the moment Lizs port can be used to give medicine but refuses to supply blood back. This means that Liz has to be restrained while they repetitively try and access her port and is very distressing for both Liz and I. The distress has made changing Lizs clothes or bathing a battle as she associates getting undressed with having her port accessed. Liz starts on her next phase of chemo tomorrow as she was delayed a week with her infection. This phase goes for a month and the first three weeks involve an anesthetic and lumbar puncture. We also start on oral chemotherapy at home. But no steroids!! I almost miss some of the benefits that the steroids provided namely the appetite as the struggle to get Liz to eat had begun. We would like to thank everyone for the beautiful thoughts, messages, gifts and visits. Again, I am completely overwhelmed with everyones love and I know Liz appreciates it as much as I do. Xx
