I realize something very similar was put out not too long ago but theres no harm in a reminder: To All Computer Users: Smart Phone & Tablet App Smarts IMPORTANT NOTICE Potential Phishing Danger Alert - A third-party Smartphone App named MyPay DFAS LES is being advertised to connect to DFAS on your behalf to access your myPay account. This App is NOT sponsored by the Department of Defense (DOD) or the U.S. Government. As Such, it presents a serious risk of compromising your account information and theft of funds. While giving your myPay account information to strangers is typically not considered a good idea, the App presents itself as an official DFAS service and as many as 50,000 members are estimated to have installed the App. Additional investigation has found similar Apps for Android and iPhone Again, DO NOT download this App or provide any PII/Privacy information to unknown or unconfirmed sources. Mobile Apps are supposed to make life easier, but some might be doing more harm than good. App fraud comes in many different forms, but the end goal is the same, to steal money or personal information from an unsuspecting App user. One of the most important things consumers can do is keep their Apps and operating systems current. Research an App before purchasing or downloading it. An App should disclose which features of a phone it needs to function, if it’s fraudulent or doesn’t do what’s promised, chances are a quick web search will yield warnings and complaints. One specific Android wallpaper App, “Jackeey” was found to be stealing personal data from its users, including Location, Phone Number, and Voicemail Passwords. This information was then sent to a website hosted in China. This particular App was downloaded somewhere between 1.1-4.6 million times. - Some Apps store personal information, some can access phone and email contacts, call logs and other stored information on your mobile device. Make sure you understand and are comfortable with providing this information before you download. - Your location may be required for many Apps to function. These Apps use specific location data for maps, nearby coupons and information on who you might know. Other Apps provide this information to advertisers to build a profile and target marketing toward your specific interests. - Do not download any App from an unfamiliar website, always use official stores/sites. Most App stores require pre-approval before any content is added for download. Clicking on links from unfamiliar websites leaves your mobile device susceptible to hackers and viruses. Many companies and sites offer Apps for their services so do your research ahead of time. - Be aware of what the App requires to run. You will be notified and required to accept or decline giving an App access to certain information on your phone. Use common sense here, so if a game App says it will need access to your contacts that should mean a major red flag to you. - Check on the developer of the application. Reminder, currently DFAS does not support any App for its services. - Install an Anti-virus/Security App. Just as you would protect your computer you can provide the same protection for your Smartphone/tablet. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your Local Installation N64 Personnel. - Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Information Assurance Manager (NASWI IAM) Marsha Gabri, Comm: 360-257-1350, [email protected] - Naval Base Kitsap Information Assurance Manager (NBK IAM) Kevyn Eckstrom, Comm: 360-396-1312, [email protected] - Naval Station Everett Information Assurance Manager (NSE IAM) Jay P Williams, Comm: 425-304-3652, [email protected] - CNRNW Information Assurance Manager (CNRNW IAM) Joseph P Ellis, Comm: 360-627-6239, [email protected] - CNRNW Information Assurance Program Manager (CNRNW IAPM), Linda D Mullins, Comm: 360-627-6206, [email protected] Remember - Information Security Is Everyones Responsibility.
