I recall a summer like this in Hill County, Texas. As Mom and Nanaw visited Jonnie Dear (my Nanaws mother) in Mt. Calm, I stayed with JB Trussels family on their farm down the dusty 2 lane county road. A lot of firsts for me that summer: milking the cow, included squirting the kittens who came for some raw milk; feeding the horses; riding bareback double with Marvin J. into the community arena for the weekly roping. Think of a big city playground and basketball players having pick up games. Its the same in the country, except the cowboys bring their kids to have pick-up rodeos, riding sheep instead of broncs, chasing pigs on foot instead of steers on horseback. And the grown cowboys practice their real life skills: heading and heeling calves as for branding. I recall gubernatorial candidate Clayton Williams using this term in his campaign against Ann Richards. He was doing well, until one day a reporter asked his expectations come election day. Im a gonna head er and heel er and drag her through the mud, Williams said. Any country boy would appreciate the analogy. To them he was just bustin her chops. But the city folks thought it was beneath the dignity of the race for Governor. Williams popularity took a hit from which he never recovered. There are lot of thrills and spills living in the country that city folks never experience, never profit from.
