I received an email from the American Epilepsy Society encouraging me to sign a petition for the DEA to reschedule marijuana. As the leading organization of clinical and research professionals specializing in the treatment of this challenging spectrum of disorders, the American Epilepsy Society (AES) has been a very proactive voice for the medical community and has been turned to for expert opinion on this issue, providing us the opportunity to position our member epileptologists and scientists in this important discussion and more importantly to advocate for more epilepsy research. AES updated its position at the end of February to include call on the DEA to reschedule marijuana in order to facilitate research. The American Epilepsy Society and Epilepsy Foundation of America need a minute of your time on a very important issue. Recently there have been a few case reports of medical marijuana helping children with very severe epilepsy. It is critical that we undertake a scientific approach to the use of medical marijuana to determine if it actually helps people with epilepsy and, if so, determine the proper dose, possible side effects, and potential interactions with other medications. To facilitate this research, it is imperative that the DEA change the current Schedule 1 classification of medical marijuana, which is very restrictive and impedes the research.
