I received the following email from the Prime Minister: Dear Ian, Earlier today, I addressed the 57th Federal Council of the Liberal Party. This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the Liberal Party. Throughout our history, the Liberal Party has been the party of hope, reward and opportunity for all Australians. Like previous Coalition governments, our goal is to build a strong, prosperous economy for a safe, secure Australia. This has meant difficult but necessary decisions. Australia has had six years of economic drift. Economic drift is not a policy – it is simply the refuge of the political opportunist who cannot see the greater meaning of public life. Since the election, the Government has been purposefully, methodically and effectively implementing our plans to strengthen the economy and repair our borders. Operation Sovereign Borders is working. There is still work to do but there has not been one single successful people-smuggling venture this year. As part of our Economic Action Strategy, we are cutting red tape, lowering tax, encouraging more trade and repairing the Budget. Australia is currently paying $1 billion a month in interest on Labor’s debt - this is dead money. The Budget reduces Australia’s projected debt by $300 billion over a decade. The early progress is encouraging. Since the start of the year, 100,000 new full-time jobs have been created. In the weeks ahead, I want to see the Carbon Tax and the Mining Tax scrapped. Scrapping the Carbon Tax will save the average family $550 a year and will reduce electricity prices by about 9 per cent. The Coalition Government, on your behalf, is putting in place the policies to build a better Australia and a more prosperous future in which all Australians share the benefits. You can read my Federal Council address here. Regards, Tony Abbott Prime Minister
