I received the following request by email from Barbara Loose who lives down in Hertfordshire and is not herself a Burtonian but it would appear that her mother was and she also isnt a facebook user. Are any of the members of our group able to help her by providing information about the childrens home? Anything anyone can find I can either forward to her by email of I can pass her email address on. She has also asked if anyone has a photos of Stanton Road taken around the 1920s. Please, is it possible you might be able to help me. I am trying to find records [admissions and discharges - childrens home register of girls taken in after 1920] of a possible Workhouse [in Belvedere Road, Burton] or that of the Burton-on-Trent Union which, I believe, established a girls` home at The Ferns, Station Road, Barton-under-Needwood. [I believe, also, that in 1924 the home could have housed eleven girls - the superintendent was an A. S. Scott.]; also, might there have been a Burton Ladies Assn. Girls` home in Union Street, Burton-on-Trent? My request/reason: in 1925 my mother `s mother [Rosina Gadsby] died and my mother [Edith Mary Gadsby born 1920 at 243 Stanton Road, Burton-on-Trent], together with her sister [Gladys Gadsby - and possibly other siblings] were placed in a home in Burton as their father was unable to look after them. I believe there were childrens homes [mentioned above] where the children may have been taken. My mother`s natural Aunt - [being her mother`s sister, Mary Susannah Rose] later adopted my mother, bringing her to live at Watford in Hertfordshire. I am hoping there might be information somewhere relating to a childrens` home in the area where my mother may have been taken [when about 5years old], with names of the intake of children during c1925, and placement of children. Please can you help me. Thank you, Barbara Loose
