I received this e-mail this morning from a friend of mine whose last name I have intentionally omitted. This provides a link to a You-tube copy of a documentary, Eternal Memory, narrated by Meryl Streep, about life for Ukrainians during the years of the Soviet Union. I was so overcome that I wrote a thank you to Dean Temple, a gentleman that worked on the film. Its disregard for democratic and international laws, treaties and territorial rights must not go unchallenged. As the situation in the Ukraine escalates, the producers of Eternal Memory, a riveting documentary on the terrors and subjugation of Ukraine in the Stalinist era, have posted the film on YouTube for the world to view. Eternal Memory, narrated by Meryl Streep and featuring some of the top historians in the world, is a chilling reminder of what can happen in a totalitarian state ruled by despots with total disregard for human rights and international laws. On a personal note, in the segment on Lviv, my own maternal grandfather was tortured and murdered in the prison called Lacki, in Ukrainian, Lontskoho. It is mentioned that once the Soviets were driven out, people started to go to the prisons to find their loved ones. One of the eyewitnesses mentioned that faces had been mutilated so that people could not be recognized. In the case of my grandfather, he had been tortured by electrical wires, his tongue was cut out and his eyes were gouged out. The only way my mothers brother and uncle recognized him was by his belt and sandals.
