I received this first hand via email. I edited it to remove the names. I wanted to share this because I am ashamed to say I am guilty of this. This is sinking in and is very distressing. I dont want to miss another opportunity with my son. One day we will all wake up and realize we missed something and there is no way to get it back. Please read and share this. Cautionary tale: Some friends and I stopped to have lunch at Cracker Barrel. There was about a 20-minute wait. My friend and I were rocking on the porch across from a family of three. The child was a slight 13-14 year old boy. He was sitting quietly in his chair while Mom and Dad worked intently on their iPhones. They never looked up and said nothing. The boy tried to engage Mom with a little chitchat but she never looked up and only commented with a word or two. He retired to his little world, rocked a while, and then tried to get Dad’s attention with an informed question about the impending football bowl-game. He hoped to get a conversation going and indeed the question warranted a lively debate. Instead Dad said, “That’s hard to say.” and dove back into the iPhone. With that, the frail little fellow looked like he had been slapped and rocked quietly for a few minutes before wandering off to the gift shop. Still, neither of them even looked up or asked where he was going. These damned machines are destroying us in a way that I never realized to that minute. It really upset me and I still am sad about it. Such an easy to understand example of something we parents probably have done to a lesser extent in the rush of life and work, etc... I do not know why I wanted to tell about this but I am afraid that personal relationships have submerged behind the iPhone and something big and bad is happening and we do not realize it. Like the frog in the pot.
