I recently answered a few question on a ceramics question and answer group on fazebuk. Several things came up in my brain. How to make casein glue, milk paint, killed plaster and duco cement. Also in the mix but not discussed was making your own filled epoxies. Casein is the protein in milk. It can be liquified into a glue or paint binding with various chemicals including borax, and slaked lime. Once set, although a water born glue it is very water resistant and in many uses can be considered water proof. Duco cement is a nitrocellulose dissolved in acetone and is a great around the house glue. It is water proof and sets up pretty quick. Mind the fumes and its flammability. My fathers Handbook of Chemistry and Physics at school and my current home copy 1956 both have a great recipe for Varnish to protect Labels (page 3045),Typed labels may be protected by several coats of a varnish made by dissovling ordinary tooth brush handles in acetone. Ordinary apparently was nitrocellulose handles. People ask where I learn things like this. I use to say that I read anything, but I have a real interest in reading old technical literature about using materials. There is great stuff in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Google has an incredible collection of FREE books online. I like ones from before the early 1950s.
