I recently came across this poem about McDonough and thought I would share. I believe it is from either the 1920s or 1930s,taking into consideration I found it with a scrapbook from those times. I felt it was appropriate to put here since the cemetery is referenced in the song: A RECENT COMPOSITION BY JOHN P. SCOTT The Hills of Mac Donough is one of the recent compositions of John Prindle Scott and the same is still in manuscript form. Mr.Scott sang it to a delighted audience at McDonough on Tuesday evening and may sing it again at the concert in the M.E.church here next Tuesday. The words of the song are: THE HILLS OF O MAC DONOUGH Pleasant to me is the fond memory Of the days in the sweet summer weather, When happy and free I went roaming the hills, I and my youth together. Fair, fair was the summer sky Soft were the clouds that were drifting by; High was the heart as a gay thistle down, As higher we clambered above the town. Where the hills o Mac Donough lay stretched in a line, All girdled and crowned with the maple and pine, Oh,the hills o Mac Donough are fresh and green--- And the hills o Mac Donough are the fairest Ive seen. Wherever I wander, wherever I roam, Those hills o Mac Donough keep calling me home. But the years are many, many The years are long and long Since I heard from the hill top, The meadow larks song. And off in the stillness of some summer day, My thoughts will go winging to the little winds blow In the hills o Mac Donough as they did so long ago? Do the wild, pink roses bloom By the side of the old mill? Does the road still winding go Up over Proctor hill? Some day when the meadows are all painted green And the summer sun shines on the lakes silver sheen, Tis I will come back over land and oer sea Where the hills o Mac Donough are waiting for me. Oh,the hills o Mac Donough are sturdy and true, As the north star of heaven is its riverlet of blue, And its there, neath the pine trees, Id lay me down to sleep, Where those hills of Mac Donough Their endless vigils keep.
