I recently heard a story from a friend that I cant seem to stop thinking about so Im gonna share it. There was a young woman on the same retreat I was on in Bali who realized while we there that she was going to need to quit drinking. She seemed ok with this but the fact that it was going to mean uprooting herself from her circle of friends whom she regularly referred to as her family was killing her. She had fallen in with this crowd at a young age and much of their connection was formed in one bar that was owned by a friend, while they were all drunk. When we left Bali in July she didnt think she would ever be able to walk away from it all and you could see the weight of it in her ever compassionate eyes. Six months later (yesterday) I hear from her I and she sounds a little shaken up. She goes on to tell me that she did manage to leave and had just recently got a place of her own up in the mountains three hours away from her old stomping grounds. The six month process had been a painful one with all of the feelings of guilt and betrayal and sadness and fear that one would expect, but she had done it. Her first night in the new house had been the previous night and she went to sleep feeling awesome and proud and so excited for her new start. Heres where shit gets crazy. The next morning she wakes to a text message and learns that her entire crew from the bar is headed to a cabin 5 minutes from her new home in the mountains, that day. So what does she do? She decides to go see everyone and try to hang out with them and reconnect. It turns into a disaster of an experience in which she is offered drink after drink and has to say over and over that she doesnt drink anymore. The final test occurs when the girl who was her best friend, after already offering her several drinks, slams a shot of whiskey down in front of her and says drink this!! What does my girl do next? She says no thank you and drives herself home. I have rarely felt more in awe of another humans courage.
