I recently joined this group and am enjoying reading some of the discussions. My mother realised I couldn’t smell when I was about six (60 years ago!). One day in the garden she commented what a lovely smell the flowers had, and I bent down to sniff them, not understanding that you were supposed to be able to smell them without bending down. Since then I have just lived with it. I have always been a bit puzzled that I could “smell” things like ammonia and acetone, but now that I know about the trigeminal nerve it all makes sense. Sometimes I “feel” a smell, like when my husband was running some sort of engine in the barn and I said it felt fumey. The discussions about food are interesting. I’ve always said I could taste things, but realised that I wasn’t tasting them the same as “normal” people – I’m obviously not getting the flavour, and my likes and dislikes are mostly about texture.
