I recently learned that we lost an elderly neighbor during our past hard winter, and I wanted to send a small tribute to Dear Henry. While walking Tully one morning on the far end of our block, not long after we brough the White Hot Mess home, a cheerful gnome of an old man hailed us from his yard. Tully is a nervous dog, and does not always warm up to strangers, although he has learned to be polite and non-threatening. In this instance, Tully whimpered, wagged his tail furiously, and did the Tully Dance where he rapidly beats his front paws on the ground. Henry came to him and literally embraced my dog, while Tully gave him kisses and happy smiles. Every time we saw Henry after that initial meeting, the hugs, kiss and love flowed between my neighbor and the BWD. It was beautiful to see and I credit Henry with helping Tully accept strangers, which is difficult enough for a White Shepherd mix who doesnt suffer from an anxiety disorder. This spring, we didnt see Henry and it was only by accident that we came across his Obituary. We were devastated as we live in my husbands boyhood home and Henry and his family have lived down the block since Petes birth. An era had ended. I mourned the loss of a small, happy, loving old man who embraced my new dog literally with open arms. It was only later that his wife expressed her amazement at the bond formed between Tully and her husband. You see, Henry was afraid of dogs, especially big dogs. Yet he reached deep inside himself and found the strength and courage to return Tullys love for him tenfold. Godspeed, Henry. You are greatly missed.
