I recently posted about an Arts Council funded initiative. They have been awarded £292,500 as part of the ‘Cultural Destinations’ project to promote tourism in my area. I’m a professional wedding and events photographer. And they want to produce information packs ‘with lots of lovely pictures of people enjoying themselves in the area’. Apparently other photographers have ‘kindly consented’ for them to use their photographs. I wasn’t entirely sure whether they intended to offer payment for my work so I asked if I would be paid or they expected to use my images for free. This is the answer I received “We would prefer to use them for free with a photographer’s credit, as this is what the other people have agreed to” So It would seem that within the £292,500 awarded by the Arts Council there is no budget for paying photographers? I would have thought that photography would be very important part of a campaign to promote tourism and culture in a specific area. I have pictures of pretty much everything that happens in my area and they expect them for free. Not bleeding likely.
