I recently read a post where the poster witnessed a patron refusing to accept a dollar coin in their change. The poster applauded the patron on the basis that the motto "In God We Trust" does not appear on the most recent dollar coins. Point one: The motto did not appear on US coins until 1864 and was made law that all coins should have this motto in 1865. Most historians believe it was a way of implying that God was on the side of the Union during the Civil War. Point two: (and more important than the previous) The statement that "In God We Trust" is NOT on the coin is UNTRUE. Check the edge of the coins in question. You will find the mint date, "E Pluribus Unum", stars, AND "In God We Trust" embossed on the side.
