I recently read an article in The Week, which talked about how Tamil Nadu is slowly decaying. No city in Tamil Nadu is decaying as fast and as badly as Coimbatore. I remember when my father retired and we went and bought a house in Coimbatore in November 1989. It was like WOW!!!. A city almost devoid of pollution, no power cuts, one of the best quality drinking water, very equitable climate so that you never sweated in summer nor felt very cold in winter, always around 22 degrees Celsius, with a mild mountain breeze blowing 24/7/365, seasonal rains, availability of all kinds of vegetables, and indeed anything you may want to buy, peaceful and secure, the citizens extremely polite and conscious of keeping the city clean, an abundance of quality educational and medical institutions, extremely well connected by road, rail and air, excellent comfortable public transport, prosperous, spacious, affordable.............I could go on and on. The Tamil Nadu Governments of yore had done their bit but the migrants from Andhra, Karnataka and Kerala, who integrated themselves with the local Tamilians and made the city their own, also made the city what it then was. From then on all I have seen is a downhill race. The ruling class, intent of filling its own coffers neglected the State and the city, so much so that now any small town of Bihar or UP or Jharkhand, which are considered developing States within a developing Country is far far better than Coimbatore. I have written about several issues that plague the city earlier, but now these problems have become too many to fit in a Facebook post. One needs to write a series of volumes like the works of Joseph Needham. As a person, who adopted the place and who adapted to it, and who hopes to settle down there if I retire alive, I sincerely hope something good happens to Coimbatore. As a latest example, I understand that Coimbatore does not even find any mention and therefore not very high on the priorities of the Indian Railways where Minister Prabhu announced a slew of measures to improve railways.
