I recently spent an inordinate amount of time explaining to a lady over the phone that I was not the Siyabonga that she thought I was. The original Siyabonga (her Siyabonga) had apparently met her in PMB some time ago where they not only exchanged numbers (and hotel bedding knows what else) but also promised each other the sun, the earth, and whatever else lies in-between. How it came to be that she called me. Angazi. The conversation went something like this: Lady: Hello Siyabonga, uyaphila papa? Me: (hesitantly) Yebo ngiyaphila wena? Lady: Im fiiiinnneee (putting on that whole seductive tone thing) we have to meet maaaan. Me: O--oookay; and what exactly would this meeting be about? And pardon me, but who am I speaking to? Lady: Its me Bridgette, silly! Didnt you save my number? Me: Hhay Bridgette, ngeke, are you sure youve got the right person? Because I am not one who easily forgets acquaintances. Lady: Siya! Drop the act. Golden Horse? Hellowww? Me: Hha! Ehhotela futhi? (and in a soliloquy, The next thing shell be telling me theres a bun in the oven, my bun!). No maam; I dont think you have the right person. Lady: Siyabonga - we went to school in Port Shepstone together, and when we met in PMB we continued where we left off... Me: Sisi - I have to rush to a meeting. But if it helps clear the fog, I never attended school in Port Shepstone, neither at primary nor at high school level. I did my high schooling at a school in Isipingo. Bye..tu-tu-tu. Two minutes later an SMS comes through. It reads: Bhuti, excuse the earlier mistake, I got your number from a work related e-mail and saved it in my phone because I wanted to call you regarding some information I need for something I am working on. I clearly mistook you for someone else. Yoh, this is too embarrassing. Sorry neh. :-) I wanted to respond and say: Bhasop, nest time uyovuka ekhebheni thizeni eMlazi kudlala isigubhu sikaMaWillies Igagu ezipikheni ze-Technics uma uzohamba ulahlela amapansula! Kodwa ngabuye ngazikhuza.
