I recently spoke to someone who has an illness that carries a lot of stigma. He told me that in the past twenty years only three people had ever called him (aside from relatives). I was one of those people. This breaks my heart. Meanwhile I have a number of memories of certain people sitting around talking about him and making patronising comments about him as though they cared. Yet they have never once picked up the phone. Sometimes I just think that most people are shit. Caring is a doing word. Words said to third parties are cheap, hypocritical, meaningless and really just gossip.
