I reconnected with someone I interviewed many years ago, a servant/ organizer in the 9th ward in New Orleans. She has helped build half a dozen houses for other people and is now working on finishing her own re-build, a place on stilts on the lot where the home her grandfather built was destroyed during Katrina. I am going to raise some money for her and offer the chance for others to contribute. Do you suggest me just passing the virtual hat in a quiet way or using a crowdfunding platform? Im sure we can help her out but Im not sure what is best. She currently needs about $45,000 total. I was there and she has a house frame and a basic place to stay, but no electricity or water. She needs plumbing work; electric; insulation. She runs electricity from her cousins house next door. I could go on, and will, about how transformative her work has been in the community. One reason she hasnt finished the rebuild is that she keeps donating money and supplies to other people in need. She told me a story about how she saved up to buy some drywall, but ended up giving it to a senior citizen doing a rebuild. She is very much of the Bodhisattva mind -- help others first. I may share more later but for now Im just inspired and thinking what makes the most sense. Practical/logistical question about how best to help.
