I regret to say that I had the most disgusting food experience at the new Spur Steak ranch at Bedford Centre yesterday. i went with two friends to have lunch, and while they ordered toasted sandwiches i wanted something more substantial and ordered the full calamari dish. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it simply did NOT look like the calamari i have had at Spurs many times before. It was dark brown, with no evidence of any batter. The taste was simply disgusting. My friends also tasted a piece each and agreed that it was terrible ! They, in the meantime had drowned their chips in barbecue sauce to make them edible. Obviously the oil that was being used was WAY past its sell by date. To try and get the terrible calamari taste out of my mouth, I made the mistake of tasting a fork full of onion rings. BIG mistake ! The onion rings were soggy, and simply tasted of old oil. Management agreed to exchange the calamari for the buffalo chicken wings - a long time Spur favourite of mine. Even BIGGER mistake ! The wings were putrid ! Again, old oil usage was evident, and the marinade had a very strange sour smell. I managed to eat two before I started feeling physically ill, and sent them back to the kitchen. Management offered to give me a bowl of ice cream as compensation, and assured me that they had ordered the oil to be changed. How did that help me ? I rushed home, and proceeded to be physically ill for the next two hours. My friends and I agreed that this was the last time we would patronise the Spur group. I am absolutely disgusted !
