I remember a while back when I said that Jaco never didnt - TopicsExpress

I remember a while back when I said that Jaco never didnt improvise his solo on Donna Lee how upset Jaco got by my saying this. I said that my comment wasnt meant to disrespect Jacos musical contribution. How can you disrespect a genius, really the only one that we have on the electric bass. It was a statement made to remind people that the extreme way that fans view their heroes is unrealistic. It is the fans that view bass players completely incorrectly. Also it is fans who have messed up music education because they allow stupidity to function and even pay to learn it. Shouldnt this stop and let a little common sense enter into how bass players think, at least as a group? Jaco was not a good improvisational soloist. He knew this and so he wrote out his solos or rehearsed them and learned them before recording his solos. Here is a clip of an early version of Donna Lee, the first tune on this link. Notice that the solo is nearly verbatim to the solo he recorded on his first solo record. He was still writing and updating the solo when this version was recorded. So enjoy it for what it is, an early statement of a tune still being worked out. https://youtube/watch?v=w2D6tp_Bleg
