I remember all the sunrises I watched from a windshield just as - TopicsExpress

I remember all the sunrises I watched from a windshield just as I remember all the sunsets from a steering wheel. I remember chilly morning air, breakfast, coffee, the smell of gasoline. I remember brief smiles, toll roads, loose change and day dreams. I remember all the diners the birdbaths taken in the sink the truckers and the nods of their heads at one o’clock in the morning. All of the relationships that I recalled when I saw those one-way signs and how if you drive fast enough it looks like there aren’t any broken lines. I remember all the turns and roundabouts all the times that I got lost all the places the wrong turns took me and all the beauty and destruction that I saw. I remember all the places I passed and had been to along the way all the ones that I couldn’t bear to leave but couldn’t convince myself to stay. All the bad news I heard from a loudspeaker the beatings that I gave to my dashboard thinking I should just turn back but always pushing my foot down a bit more. I remember all the back roads, those times I just had to scream kicking my tires, crying and cursing shrinking back against my door in defeat. I remember all the refuge I sought from the fresh air and the sunshine 100 miles an hour and declaring, ‘this is what living tastes like.’ I remember all the times I decided to drive instead of deal to just go instead of leave go faster instead of feel. All the songs I sang loudly and all the ones I cried quiet. All of what I was searching for and how I could never find it. Alive and free is what I came to know And now I see there is no place like home (there is no place for me) no place like the open road. -Cey
