I remember as a child growing up in Alfords Bend in Hokes Bluff. I am an only child so I had to find ways to entertain myself until my daddy got home. I would walk through the woods and find all kinds of little treasures. Would take the tractor road to the river and fish for hours on end. Lay on my back in the field behind our house and watch the clouds float by. Walk down rows of cotton and pick a double handful just to smell it. Walk the dirt road to my grandmothers house (until they paved it). Ahhhhh grandmothers house. Thats another story. My grandfather planted acres and acres of cotton and was white as far as the eye could see. On hot days I would walk the creek that ran behind our house, past down the the hollar behind grandmothers all the way to the river. I made sure it took hours. Would find Mr Ed my pony and ride him bareback wherever he felt like taking me. The wonderment and amazement of being a child in a simpler time. No social media. Only a rotary phone in the kitchen and parents bedroom. One TV. Didnt matter I was outside all the time anyway. I would climb to the very tip top of the biggest trees and let the wind sway me back and forth. I felt closest to God then. Thinking the higher I got, the closer to him I was. I miss those days.
