I remember before animation college, being confused and even ashamed of what kind of an artist I was. I assumed a proper artist as being someone who sold elaberate, fine, exquisite paintings and sculptures, who would often be showcased in a fine museum, etc. I once showed my drawings (at the time, I had been doing fantasy/realism, with a story behind every drawing) to an artist during his show, who had painted the wall of a church. He tilted his head and scoffed, oh, thats what a lot of kids draw your age. It made me question my maturity as an artist! I didnt take it as an insult, but it encouraged me to study finer art. When I went to college, I realized we were building our ability not only to do fine realism in figure drawing, but used it as a foundation to support our ability to draw pictures that werent necessarily realism, but told a story that could be showed on television. Ive always been striving to tell a story more so than sell an elaberate painting, but make something that could be in a graphic novel or show. College enabled me to find what kind of an artist I am (without shame) and even the kind of person I am (whose not so different). Im not a fancy fine artist, Im a straight up storyteller. I wish I could find that artist and tell him what I am! Would he be interested in my art more? He was the reason I went to search for what kind of an artist I was! Im now trying to develop my own style in cartoon/story telling. Or what ever youd call it. (Not disney, not anime, but something of my own of course) it will have to start with copying other styles. No longer am I ashamed of that or feel as though Im wasting my time on storytelling art! This may or not be the reason I love drawing again, thanks to college. College taught us how to tell the story better. Ive never been so excited to go home and draw all night! Ive found a love for it as much as I loved writing. I just love telling stories!
