I remember being in Stockholm, Sweden and feeling as if I was in - TopicsExpress

I remember being in Stockholm, Sweden and feeling as if I was in the old segregated American south. I visited Stockholm with my girlfriend around 2007. She was a native New Yorker but her family came from Turkey fleeing Nazis. She looked Turkish. After several weird moments - passive hostility, passive alienation - on the street, in stores, Miriam turned to me and said: They all think Im an immigrant from Turkey. I kind of laughed, I was fairly unaware of most political contexts then: What do you mean? Youd have to be the only one from Turkey here! There are tons of Turkish immigrants here but they hate them, hate Muslims, isolate them, and keep them far out of the city in ghettoes.
