I remember being seventeen and asked to go to work for the Portales Police Department. I accepted worked two weeks before a major bus wreck came in between Ft. Sumner and Clovis. A lot of lives lost, a cattle truck and church bus trying to cross over a bridge to small. You cannot image how hard it was when people came rushing in trying to find out information on who was involved. Sad night. Influenced me to become a woman officer which I was for the City of Roswell. I worked as a FTO patrol woman on the street for seven years before marrying my husband. Not only was I a woman officer back then which were few, I finished the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy without a handicap wavier. Not a lot of people knew I had polio as a baby when I was in Portales. Even with a handicap that did not even come in as a factor when you want something badly.
