I remember being with my dad out on the farm near Ottumwa Iowa. - TopicsExpress

I remember being with my dad out on the farm near Ottumwa Iowa. The farm did not belong to us, but we felt right at home there. The widow Mary owned it and liked my dad quite a bit -- he had been her preacher for several years while he was working his way through graduate school. Anyway, I remember on one particular day being with my dad, standing at the pig-pen (this farm had hogs and cows and chickens and corn), my left foot up on the bottom rail of the wooden fence as I leaned on my knee with both hands. Dad stood with his left foot on the second rail of that same fence, leaning with both hands on his knee. Dad was turned slightly away from me and talking to Slim, the widows farm hand. I leaned forward so that I could peer around Dad at the overall-clad story teller. I spose it IS kinda a rare thing, to have a three-legged hog. But thiss no ordernary hog. Slim motioned over his shoulder to the big new barn. It stood out on the property as the newest structure with the freshest paint job. Couple years back theres a fahr ut burnt at ooollld barn to th ground. Happns frm time t time. Cept this uz diffrnt cuz lil Brenna n Brenda was in there somewheres. Afore anyone knew ut was happnn, sure enough that there hog comes a bustin through the side of the old barn. Busted right through the wood, down ere it was rotted. Right behind came the twins, on their hands n knees. They uz cougin and cryin but they uz alright. Slim turned and looked Dad squarely in the face, Th twins said the hog ad come n found em en the fahr started. They said it uz like he saved theyre lives. My Dad raised his eyebrows in appreciation for the dramatic touch that the farm hand had given the story. He replied A three legged pig saved the little girls? That is truely impressive! Slim looked puzzled. Nah, at hog had all four legs. Oh, did it get injured in the fire? Is that why it only has three legs now? Dad seemed genuinely curious. Nah, sighed Slim, now hanging his head and looking at the grass. He seemed reluctant, somehow, but shortly resumed. Ya see, at hog uz a pritty speshl hog. N wellllll, when ya get a hog at good, ya jus would NOT wanna eat it all at once. That was a true story -- but of course, it never happened. :)
