I remember getting mad when Eddie Murphy made fun of Glen Campbell years ago. The joke, at the 1985 MTV Awards: If someone dropped a bomb on this place, Glen Campbell would be the biggest star left in the world.” Ive never liked Eddie Murphy since, because I have always loved Glen Campbell. I loved Glen Campbell because he always made records that gave me chills: that ultimate feeling when youre listening to a really good song. I remember hearing Wichita Lineman when I was about five years old and knowing that there was something incredible about that song. Ive never heard it without getting chills when he sings I know I need a small vacation, but it dont look like rain ... A guy having to take his vacation when it rains was as sad to me as a kid as He Stopped Loving Her Today is to me now. Ive always loved Glen Campbell. When his 2008 comeback album Meet Glen Campbell came out I was more excited about that record than anything Id heard in years. He was really back - singing songs I loved. I wore that cd out and made a lot of people mad by playing it too much. Shortly after that record came out I heard Glen Campbell had Alzheimers. Ive never met the man, but I was devastated. How could this be happening to someone who was clearly back in his prime. And then the Ghost in the Canvas album came out and it was even better. I was even more devastated. If you havent seen Glen Campbells new video Im Not Gonna Miss You take three minutes to watch it now. The first time I heard the song it was a little off-putting because hes so direct: hes not going to miss the last love of his life because he is losing his memory. But the more I listen to the song the more I see the brutal, beautiful honesty Glen Campbell is sharing of what it is like to live (and die) with this disease that is affecting so many people - both those stricken with Alzheimers and those around them. Glen Campbell has always made records that give me chills.
