I remember him sitting in the study on a Saturday, 6 hours in his chair, preparing to preach his ten thousandth message with as much reverence for God’s word as when he prepared the first. I remember that last Sunday he preached, and the pain in our hearts as he slowly inhaled oxygen between sentences but still and forever the words that will be his legacy in my memory: “Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness”. I remember hearing him preach in Hungary, listening to him reminisce about Guatemala, how he never went to Africa but wished he had, how he was faithful in one place, with one church, for so many, many years, and how much he encouraged me to love the world. I remember when he would preach and cry, how the stroke gave him a range of emotions previously covered by strength. I remember one year ago tonight, waking to the news that he was home. I remember the choruses that are forever settled in my head and heart because of his preaching, how “The Lord Bless Thee” is both a benediction from Scripture and the words that he spoke over me as a blessing, every week, for 26 years of my life. I remember and am thankful for his life and for life forevermore, and that our goodbyes here on earth are actually just - until we meet again. You know?
